Communication Skill-Building Workshops

Positive Power Communication

Excellent communication skills are essential to achieving both professional and personal goals. If you are unable to hold your ground or are intimidated by certain communication situations, you don't have to transform your personality to inject power into your communication. Feel more comfortable-even when you must "think on your feet." Make a powerful impact and impression at meetings. Put an end to over-apologizing, over-accommodating and speaking tentatively. Learn to receive and deliver constructive criticism, as well as to handle conflict and confrontations. Through understanding and practicing the skills used by power communicators, you can present your ideas with credibility, authority and confidence.

Participants will learn to:

  • Use power in your communication to greater advantage.
  • Debunk myths and misconceptions about communication.
  • Retain control in tough situations with difficult people.
  • Present a point of view in a direct, concise way-to gain respect.
  • Project their voices more effectively.
  • Determine when it is most effective to use an indirect approach.
  • Adjust body language and gestures to convey the targeted message.
  • Handle interruptions positively and assertively.

Positive Power Team Talk: Teambuilding Through Better Communication

Teamwork is important to every organization that relies on the interaction and cooperation of team members. However, in today's fast-paced, constantly changing work environments, even a small deficit in team communication skills can lead to decreased morale and productivity. Achieving team rapport, optimism and cohesion requires that each team member learn to use the tools of Positive Power.

(The objectives for this workshop vary widely, depending on the goals of the organization.)

Participants say:

Extremely helpful -- communication is something that is so deceptively complicated and is not so instinctive as it may seem. Thank you!

What else do you have? I would enjoy a program on almost any subject if it was presented in the same format as today's! Loved the visuals!

This class opened my eyes to how to handle many situations I am faced with on a daily basis.

Excellent speaker; really kept the interest of the audience. I obtained a lot of good ideas to use in my everyday job.

Diversity & Workplace Communication

Diversity and Workplace Communication examines the communication challenges created by the rapidly changing demographics of our communities and workplaces. Our backgrounds are so different that in fact, most communication takes place across cultural lines. Assumptions and boundaries are examined and communication skills are strengthened through personal histories, self-assessments and communication exercises. Gaining knowledge and acquiring skills that allow the opening of inter-cultural dialogue and discussion of sensitive issues with co-workers, neighbors and friends has become essential to our future.

Participants will learn to:

  • Identify sources of assumptions, through self-assessment, to reveal personal boundaries to accepting diversity.
  • Examine the importance of diversity as a business initiative.
  • Diagnose inter-cultural communication problems within a work group.
  • Recognize verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication that can lead to misunderstandings and miscommunication.
  • Respond tactfully and effectively to racist, sexist or other offensive remarks.
  • Communicate with ease with individuals from different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Develop a personal action plan for stretching cultural boundaries and preparing to face the challenges and meet the opportunities diversity brings.

Participants say:

Gloria has a keen understanding of diversity. She is an impressive speaker.

Gloria's ability to convey information is clear. She supports theoretical information with practical experience.

Gloria gave us insight on different issues -- she gave good examples that I could relate to.

Obviously well-versed, read and experienced in subject. Able to bring previous experiences from many seminars.

Communication Articles

  • Communication Lessons from Mr. Rogers
I never thought I'd write about Mr. Rogers. I grew up with Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans and I must admit that when I first saw "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood," I chuckled at (what seemed to me) his odd communication style. At that time, it didn't occur to me that he was purposely speaking in that simple, deliberate way to connect with his audience....He made communication look SO easy. So easy that I almost overlooked his power as a communicator.

  • Sherlock Holmes and Listening
Recently I saw a TV show featuring a medical examiner who went beyond interpreting evidence when investigating a homicide. She and her father, a retired police officer, acted out what they thought happened. She played the part of the crime victim. In 1998, I coined the term Investigative Listening to describe high-level listening skills....Good listeners remain as alert for every clue as Sherlock Holmes.

  • Misconceptions about Listening
You have two ears and one mouth. Therefore, you should listen twice as much as you speak! When you were a child, did anyone ever tell you that? Think about it. If two people sat down for a discussion and followed that principle, there would be total silence! Of course, some people need to practice keeping their mouths shut, but some need to practice speaking out.

  • Managing the Communication Situation
One communication mistake we all make from time to time is: failing to manage the situation. We forget that the situation is one of the key communication elements, just like tone of voice and body language. All communication settings and times are not created equal. So, how can we better manage the important situations we face every day?

  • Where ARE Men and Women From???
Both genders are from the planet Earth. No matter how different our approaches to communication might be, we can decode each other's language through awareness of a few basic differences. Questions about male and female communication differences arise in almost every program I teach. My workshop titled: We're Not from Different Planets––We're Just From Different Playgrounds takes a lighthearted look at this serious topic.

  • Can You Hear Me Now? Tuning In, So They
    Don't Tune Out

Are you being heard when you speak? Not just through cell phone static, but in face-to-face meetings? When talking to some people, do you feel like yelling: Pay attention! Listen up! Their eyes wander, they have a blank stare on their face--or--if you're really not getting your message across, you see their eyelids getting heavy.
